The suggestions in the charts are guidelines only. Long satin stitches, such as in bargello, usually require one extra strand or ply of thread. Some decorative stitches may require a finer thread or fewer plies. Bear in mind, also, that the ground fabrics you stitch on can vary considerably. What is suitable for a 25 count linen, therefore, may not be exactly right for a 24 count Congress cloth. Always do a small test swatch with the fabric, thread and stitches you have in mind before beginning any important project.
