Dyed and Gone to Heaven – An Online Magazine and Needlework Resource

The CARON Collection is pleased to feature some of the outstanding shops who so ably provide stitchers with not only supplies but guidance, technical expertise, and inspiration. We hope you'll support your local shops who have given us all so much and visit our SHOP LISTINGS. This month we visit ....

Thistle Needleworks
At the Shops at Somerset Square, Glastonbury, Connecticut

Thistle Needleworks is over 4500 square feet of "fun stuff" for embroiderers! Although our specialties are Counted Cross Stitch, and Canvaswork/Needlepoint, we also carry a wide range of supplies for all forms of Counted Thread Embroidery, Crewel, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, and Brazilian/Dimensional Embroidery.

Thistle Needleworks opened its doors on July 1, 1983 and has expanded five times since then, and is now at its third (and hopefully, final!) address. Our present address is 140 Glastonbury Boulevard in the Shops at Somerset Square in Glastonbury, Connecticut. The Shops is a unique mall -- square on the outside, a circle in the inside, with a wide variety of shops surrounding a center building housing a restaurant. (Thistle Needleworks occupies a space rather triangular in shape.) After a morning at Thistle Needleworks, taking a class or shopping for some supplies for their latest project, our friends often enjoy a leisurely lunch at Max Amore Ristaurante or Chalupa's Border Grille, then stroll around the circle and perhaps shop a while at Pendleton's, Talbot's, The Gap, Gap Kids, Ann Taylor, Express, Victoria's Secret, Garden Botanica or one of the other fine shops. And there's Starbuck's Coffee, a favorite spot for non-stitching companions to wait for their shopping stitcher.

Judie Solomon, owner/manager of Thistle Needleworks, has been stitching for over 50 years and teaching embroidery for over 20 years. She is ably assisted by staff members John, Ruth, June, Julia, Debbie, Barbara, Jan, Linda, Karen, Connie, Noreen, and Corrine. All of the staff, except for Judie's husband John, were customers before they worked at "The Thistle" and bring to the shop a combined 300 years of stitching experience.

The credo at Thistle Needleworks is "expand your horizons!" This is carried out in a three part plan. First we aim to carry the largest possible variety of books, patterns, fabrics and canvases, handpainted canvases, threads, tools, and notions, frames and accessories. Needless to say, the Caron Collection threads are a primary group of threads, offering an inspiring variety of both texture and color. Our second goal is to provide service to our customers, including encouraging them to expand their horizons with the use of new threads, fabrics and techniques. This service is provided by a staff well-versed in the properties and uses of all the materials. Our third means of spreading the word about the beauty of needlework is our active schedule of classes. Sessions are currently scheduled in our well-lit classroom during weekday mornings, afternoons, and evenings as well as special events on weekends. Beginners need not be shy about attending our classes, we teach all levels of instruction.

Thistle Needleworks is open Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 6 pm, Thursday evening until 9 pm, and Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm. Directions to the shop may be found on our web page at: http://members.aol.com/ThisNeedle.

We look forward to serving all of The CARON Collection's friends and fans. Happy Stitching!
