Pastel Panache

Designed by Mary Hickmott

The design for this Pastel Panache Tablecloth and Tablemat set was originally published in New Stitches magazine, issue 98. The charts for the full tablecloth as pictured are contained therein. Below is the pattern for the matching tablemats.

The subtle shading and delicate tones of Caron thread makes it ideal for Hardanger embroidery. As the colour changes it also imparts a gentle sheen that catches the light when used to stitch traditional Hardanger motifs. The tablemat can also be worked on the green fabric if you prefer.

For a Pink tablemat you will need:
Zweigart, pink (shade 414), 22 count Oslo fabric, 12 inches (30 cms) square.
1 skein of cotton candy Caron Watercolours (shade 116)
1 skein of cotton candy Caron Wildflowers (shade 116)
Tapestry needles size 22 and 24.

For a Green tablemat you will need:
Zweigart, green (shade 611), 22 count Oslo fabric, 12 inches (30 cms) square.
1 skein of lime ice Caron Watercolours (shade 167).
1 skein of lime ice Caron Wildflowers (shade 167).
Tapestry needles size 22 and 24.

Approximate finished size of tablemat:
8 3/4 inches (22 cms) square

Chart

Working the tablemat:
One line on the chart represents one double thread of Oslo fabric. Over-sew the edges of your fabric to prevent fraying.

Start working the design from the centre of the fabric.

The Kloster blocks, Buttonhole stitch and Satin stitch motifs are worked using one strand of Caron Watercolours. The filling stitches and Eyelets are worked using Caron Wildflowers as it comes off the skein. Once the stitching is complete cut the fabric away from the Buttonhole edge.

1. Stitch the Kloster blocks of five stitches over four fabric threads, work the Satin stitch motifs followed by the Buttonhole stitch and the Eyelets.
2. Cut and withdraw the appropriate threads.
3. Work the Woven bars and Doves eye filling.

Cutting out the table mat:
All the embroidery should be complete before this stage is reached. The cutting is always done from the back of the work. Use a small pair of sharp scissors.

1. Withdraw a whole fabric thread on each side of the embroidery just outside the outermost Buttonhole stitches.
2. From the wrong side, cut the fabric close to the Buttonhole stitches on these outermost edges and right the way along the lines where the thread has been withdrawn. This will eliminate most of the margin of the fabric and you will now be able to concentrate on each corner in turn. You will find that you can often lift the fabric at an angle away from the stitches, which reduces the likelihood of cutting the stitching by mistake. Cut as close to the stitches as you can, it is better to cut too little at this stage and return for a trim later when the threads have loosened than risk cutting the stitches.
3. Carefully cut away the fabric close to the Buttonhole stitches on the remaining areas taking one step at a time.

Stitches used:

Woven Bars
Weave the thread in a figure of 8 motion over and under the exposed threads to cover them. There is no rule as to how many of these you should work, work sufficient to cover the exposed threads.

Doves Eye Filling with Woven Bars
Fasten on behind a Kloster block and bring the needle out centrally to the block. Take the stitches around the square to be filled as shown in the diagram, passing the thread under then back over the bars as you go. Be sure to take the thread over the first stitch as shown before taking the thread into the first Kloster block to pass on to the next stitch.

Buttonhole Stitch
Come up at the starting point and the needle down into the fabric four threads above and one thread along. Bring the needle out four threads below this _ this will be the hole next to the starting point.

Note: More detailed instructions for this pattern are available in Issue 54 of New Stitches.
